Re: [Killietalk] Hardness of water?

Hey, I have been wondering about the hardness of water for quite some time. I was hoping you guys can give me a better understanding of it. Like what does it mean? What does it do for your fishes?

This is one of those general questions that has been answered many times, so a little search of the web will turn up a lot of information (and misinformation, of course :-) ).

Don't confuse general hardness with alkalinity (called carbonate hardness by some chemically-ignorant translators and propagated by publishers like TFH).

You might start with:

and follow up links from there for more info.

Come back here if you encounter contradictions or confusions.

Killy-specific information can be controversial, but generally there are very few fish, including killies that will do well in water with no hardness. There are even fewer killies that can stand really hard water, like sea water. Most tolerate a wider range than you might think, in between the extremes, if acclimated slowly.
