They sound very much like what you have described. There are hundreds of them, and very unattractive to look at. So they are called glass worms?

I'm wondering if the "planaria" are "glass worms". These are generally much
smaller than Planaria, white, and can really blossom in an overfed aquarium.
They typically are most active at night and can be found slithering on the
glass sides in their hundreds and more when you turn a light on. In this
case, a diatom filter might be helpful in removing them and cleaning out the
excess food that they thrive upon.


I don't know, but I think they are harmless. I have occasionally found them
in hatching container with no damage to the eggs. They also do not seem to
be wanted by the fish as a food source. They just tend to be unsightly and
an indication that some maintenance is due or overdue.
