Re: Mailing live animals (was Re: [Killietalk] (no subject))
It's a sort of foster parent relationship.
When F&WL confiscate fish, they need to find them a good home. The BAS has volunteered to act as a holding facility for the NYC area. Our members volunteer to house and take care of any fish confiscated from F& WL, that F&WL need to house. The BAS members have to keep records, tag and freeze the fish who die and notify our F&WL Officer of the death for their records. The BAS members are not allowed to trade, sell or barter these fish as they have been seized and are technically property of F&WL.
We are often unaware as to the reasons why they have been confiscated. Perhaphs they were not marked live fish, started to leak, opened, and F&WL was involved. Or as you noted were shipped from overseas without the proper paperwork. So far it has been mostly fancy guppies, and about three members, including myself are "foster parents".
On a separate note Barry, I have been trying to track down N.furzeri, and have contacted several people. Vern Treat gave me your name, and said you don't have them, but may know someone who does. If you have any leads I would certainly appreciate it. I am currently working with Nothobranchius doing diapause studies, and furzeri, because of their short live span would speed the time of my research three fold. And it would be nice just to find out more about this fish in general.
Thanks, Olympia
