I have Aph. bitaeniatum Benin City which I have spawned very easily in my tap 
water which averages ranges between 400-450 TDS.  When I got my original 
pair, I started them off in softer water by diluting my tap water with distilled 
water.  Then I gradually raised the TDS until I was using straight tap water.  
I have had fry popping up in the breeding tank even after eggs were harvested. 
 In fact, they have been breeding so easily that I have bit's all over the 
place and have had to stop breeding them.
