Re: [Killietalk] Nothos

Bro. Paul,

Most Nothos should live for about a year. Keep them in the low to mid 70s. If you keep the temperature high they may live slightly shorter lives. Some Nothos, such as N. furzeri do only live for 6 months or so and there is not much you can do to change that. Others live well over a year. For example, I still have some wild N. korthausae that were collected in early June 2002. They are about two years old and still spawning!

I find that Nothos do well on frozen bloodworms. I buy good quality product (for example San Francisco Bay brand), thaw an appropriate amount in cool water, then rinse them in a net to get rid of soluble material that leaches from them. Feed just enough that they eat it all. I fee the fry on baby brine shrimp, of course. I think you could also raise grindal worms, as they require only a few plastic shoe boxes. Nothos of any size can be fed grindals.

I am planning to go all Nothos in the fall. I don't know if I could raise
that much live food for them to eat on a daily basis, so, what would be the
next best food for Nothos to eat and still lay eggs? This summer I plan to
try and raise some live food. Possibly daphnia, and dwarf red worms and by
the time fall comes, I may have a good start.
I have 10 tanks to devote to them. The Cinci club will have a show in the
beginning of September and that will be the time that I will buy all of my
fish. I would like to get a variety of them. Anyone coming to the show
and bringing Nothos with them?
    Sincerely,
Bro. Paul
