[Killietalk] re: flying fish
I flew to Costa Rica last November and had similar questions since I was
carrying killies to a CR hobbyist and wanted to bring back some native
Rivulus. US Air had no problem with a carryon that would fit under the
seat, but I opted to put the 40+ fish in my baggage. The newspaper
wrapped breathing bags caused some confusion at CR Customs, but was
waved through. Before I left I called F&WS and was totally discouraged
about trying to bring back anything legally. I also called Dept of Ag
about bringing back orchids, and was told I could bring back 12 with the
proper permits. My friend and I both brought boxes of 12 (on different
flights) - she didn't have the CITES and phyto permits (we forgot to
give them to her) but she breezed right through Customs after declaring
them. A week later I returned and, even though I had the permits, had
my plants held and then shipped later in the week. Most survived. Lots
of luck.
