I prefer a transmitted light with the peat slurried in water. I don't have a
problem with wetting the eggs and then if they are not ready, redrying them.
However, for my eyes, a magnifying viewer is essential with either method.
For those of us with seven or more decades on this planet, that goes
without saying. :-) I use a jeweler's loupe. Younger eyes often can do
without such crutches. YMMV.
