RE: [Killietalk] Extending Incubation Periods (was "Where Have All The Killies Gone")
First off, I must admit that I am new to killies, though not fish
keeping. Second, I am a Notho-nut. I think they are great. As such,
I'm interested in the conversations about delaying hatching times. This
gives me more flexibility of fish in my limited space.
So, I'm sure this topic has been thoroughly discussed in the past, but
it might due to have a recap of current knowledge on the subject.
First, Barry brought up a good point, especially regarding Nothos, when
trying to delay hatching (i.e. increased incubation period).
1) Keep the eggs in the tank longer (i.e. in water and peat), collecting
them less often. The dark anaerobic conditions are what are desired.
Also, I've read/heard that:
2) Lowering the incubation temp will increase the incubation period.
Can anyone share their experience of how low a temperature you can
incubate at and still get the eggs to hatch? Did I read that someone
once said 70DF?
Does anyone know of other things to contribute to this list? (And of
course I'll be happy to keep a compiled list for everyone. :) )
Cheers,
Mark Pearlscott

Dear Dr Cooper,
Yes, that is so true when tank space and living space is a premium.
Thanks for the hidden jewel of a post! I'll try to experiment on this
with fellow local hobbyists and see how much longer incubation can be
'suspended in time'.
We're also facing a similar issue of losing killie species to the hobby
in Singapore. Perhaps 'suspension' *might* help.
