a) I tend to overdose in emergencies.
b) I know how to use a test kit (did, even back then). ;-) That's how I
knew "chlorine" was present, anyway.
As I recall, survival was better in the tanks I did *not* treat with the
hypo, so that's not a very likely cause, anyway.
I switched from
commercial expensive hypo solutions that were "supposed" to eliminate chlorine
at one drop per gallon to my own solution or crystals at much higher
concentrations after I killed some fish being so careful adding exactly what the
manufacturer recommended. Later, I found that I needed about 5 times that amount to
eliminate detectable chlorine. That was long before chloramine was an issue.
This kind of issue tends to make topics like this a bit "iffy" at times.
I hope it encourages folks to get out the kit and test when in doubt. We
learn more, that way.
