That's, maybe, a little heavy handed Wright. My bottle of Aqua plus
states that it removes chlorine and chloramine and that it neutralizes
heavy metals.

Most of the old-fashioned hypo-based products make those sort of claims, often including "breaks the chlorine-ammonium bond." Novaqua is another one that claims the world but was killing so many fish in agricultural areas (high natural ammonium) that "Amquel" had to be invented, long before the recent EPA campaign. [Chloramine is a natural result of chlorinating water subject to some agricultural runoff. It has been a problem for fish for many, many years.]

I was just being my usual sceptical self. Sorry if it sounded heavy handed.

I have used this product for years and frequently do 100%
water changes on quarantined fish. I can't remember the last time I
lost a quarantined fish so this product can't be that bad.

Or you have modest chloramine levels?

I do not use it in my Daphnia cultures as they seem to come on line
more quickly with plain old tap water.

If it is a true dechloraminator, it will probably kill your Daphnia culture. I have tested "Prime," "Amquel," and "Ammo Lock 2" and all have killed Daphnia very quickly and Ostracods a bit more slowly. Same is true of paramecia and rotifers, I think.

On the other hand, I have a
beautiful Reef Tank that evaporates about a half gallon of water a day.
All of the makeup water that goes into that tank is treated with Aqua
plus. I have many thriving corals in this tank as well a bustling *pod
community.

*Pod = Reef talk for Isopod, Amphipod, Copepods, Decapods.....

Chris in Rye NY

Sounds like it is working for you, Chris.

I have gotten just cynical enough, in my old age, that I don't put much of anything in my tanks if I don't know exactly what it is and how it works. One reason I use "Amquel" is that the patent tells me exactly what it is. :-)
