Re: [Killietalk] Cloromine (sic)

and Amquel be enough? I imagine seeding the barrel with tank water and
letting the water age some may help to change the ammonia to nitrite and
then nitrate but I don't know if this would be enough. What other options
might work?

I am lucky enough to have a carbon prefilter on my R.O. water, but like
Robert, am concerned about tap water and the killies. Is aerating the water
at a boil for a couple of days going to force any nitrogenous stuff out or
merely raise the humidity level of one's home? ;)

Just the latter!

While chloramine is a bit lower in antibacterial strength, it is quite stable, so it reaches the far ends of distribution systems at nearly the same levels as at the start. Chlorine, OTOH, gets weak if you are far from the water plant, as it has stopped to form carcinogens and other nasties, en route. :-)

It is pretty safe to assume that after 5 weeks of your "boiling" aeration, about half the chloramine would be gone. If you used hypo, to separate the chlorine and ammonium, and the same aeration, most of the ammonium might be gone in a few days or a week or two, but its high solubility still makes it tough to get rid of, I think. You need a high pH to get much of it into the unionized form, NH3, and only that will be sent to the room. The NH4+ will try to stay in solution, I suspect. Testing for harmful levels of ammonia is out of the question. We can't afford the sensitivity required.

What is wrong with trickling your tap water through a carbon filter to fill your storage barrel? Chlorine test lets you know if it is safe, if you don't tinker with the chlorine-ammonia bond.
