Great post.  How did they gain such a horrible reputation?  Also, can they be sustainably cultured on a small scale?  I have kept blackworms in the past, but found that they didn't reproduce fast enough to warrant the time and effort I was spending on them.

In recent years, Kordon has been importing tubifex worms from eastern 
Europe, and selling them in their little "breathable" sachets (for 
well-above the price of gold?). [Enough to feed a fishroom would break 
you in a big hurry.]
