Re: [Killietalk] L. tanganicanus need of males and females
Actually, San Jose water, 350ppm, PH 7.6 is not enough to keep them happy. I used dolomite powder and Espon salt. Javamoss surprisingly did well in the tank. I hatched the eggs in a 5g tank, with sponge filter. Frys were removed as soon as they hatched to a 10g tank. The breeder should do well in a 30g tank or larger, with good filtration. That was what I started with. The reason why they were in a 240g tank because I used to have 200-300 of them. In general, your tank should not have problem with ammonia. It is not a difficult fish, as long as you keep them in a "typical" fish tank. You shouldnot keep in them a tank with little or no filtration, with fouled uneaten food. They are a joy to watch, along with none- aggressive cichlid.

We both had nice hard water, with ample Ca and Mg and enough carbonate
hardness to keep them pretty alkaline.
He used huge tanks, and was really religious about water changes, while
I was pretty good, but that's not good enough at high pH. I was using a
20G low that did fine until I missed one water change.
Heavy-eating high-metabolism fish produce lots of ammonium. Fewer fish
in a larger tank can give them some cushion, but A 3/4-filled 20G didn't
let them survive my mistake.
In this case, the "metabolic mediator" was a lethal dose of ammonia.
This is a tough fish to keep, because the water they like is
unhospitable to many kinds of plants that would otherwise temper the
high ammonia. Do what Robert did. Raise them in a 250G tank!
That's my US$0.02. YMMV.
