I posted on this sometime last year. All Jiffy peat pellets are essentially the
same peat and all have some amount of fertilizer. Last spring, when I could
not find any of the 703 pellets, Home Depot had these bags of what looked
exactly like 703 and where in a plastic bag of 25. The product number was 453
or something like that. They had them in yellow bags and green bags each had a
different product number.
I got curious. I called Jiffy and pulled the "This is Dr. Alegre calling"
routine. I eventually worked my way up to a Technical Product manager. This
is the person who told me that the Jiffy pellets where essentially the same
material. They very in size, the strength of the webbing around the peat, and
packaging. The exception to the above are those labeled as "Fertilized" which
contain additional fertilizer. He said the amount and types of chemical
fertilizers in the normal pellets was low and would easily be removed by
rinsing as you stated. He would not comment on specific chemicals. He also did
comment that they knew that people used these to spawn certain types of fish
but that they did not "endorce" such a practice.
Peace
