Re: [Killietalk] White Worm Keeper

I have been reading RJ's discussion of synthetic worms with interest. Last
winter I had an excess of white worms so I decided to put some on a sponge
sitting in a shoe box half full of water. They didn't do very well but I
kept feeding them (regularly at first but I soon began to neglect them as I
would forget to feed them for a week or two at a time). In the beginning I
had trouble with the food becoming covered with fungi. I treated the problem
by feeding the culture with fruit fly media which has a fungus retardant.
The problem stopped so I went back to my regular food.
After reading RJ's observations I started feeding regularly again. I noted
that the fungus problem has stopped and the worms are smaller then the ones
I keep in peat moss & limestone mixture. This is far from a scientific study
but I figured that I would let the list know my observations. I plan to use
some of the small worms to start a peat moss culture to see if they stay
small or go back to regular size. I will let the list know.
