RE: [Killietalk] grindal worms

Richard,
You can save the culture with a little work. Dump the culture into a larger
container and flood with cold tap water. Swirl and then carefully pour out
the floating muck [and "little bugs", as they will also float] while
retaining the worms. Repeat this several times and you will end up with
reasonably clear water and some heavy soil particles mixed in with the
worms. Pour most of the water out and then add the worms to a fresh, new
starter media. Feed the worms just a few flakes of oatmeal until the
culture grows and can consume more food. In about 2 weeks or at the first
sign of any other mites ["little bugs"] add a small piece of mothball to the
corner of the culture which will kill and keep out re-infestations of the
mites. Use mothballs made from Para dichlorobenzene, not ones made from
naphthalene. The consensus on killietalk is that this chemical works
better.
As a side note, I agree completely with 'Tranquility Base' that given the
right conditions something takes hold in the white worm and grindal worm
beds that keeps them free from macro mold, fungus and mites for long periods
of time. I have had sweater box sized cultures go many months with no mite
or springtail infestations. Fungus and mold issues also long ago
disappeared in those cultures. Perhaps it is bacterial or perhaps it is
microscopic molds or fungus that predominate to keep the culture relatively
fresh and running. Don't know.
Hopefully, others will offer some other recommendations.

I just recieved a grindal worm starter in the mail. The sample has
thousands of little bugs (and a few hundred grindal worms). Should I toss
the starter and try again or is there no such thing as a grindal worm
starter that is just grindal worms?
