[Killietalk] RE: oversized Grindal worms

John,

I've kept Grindals for years and always remember older worms growing to
at least 3/4 of an inch. Of course it is possible that mine are not, as
you say "true Grindals". That said most of the worms that I harvest are
smaller than 1/2 inch. They also culture fine between 70 and 80 degrees
and stop producing in the low 60s (They sound like Grindals to me).

I don't have many cultures going right now but if you are interested I
could start one for you. It sounds like you are looking for something
smaller though.

Cheers,
Chris

Subject: Re: [Killietalk] White Worm Keeper

This is sort of off thread but I was wondering if anyone has a comment.

I am having a real problem finding real Grindal Worm starters. Without
setting
up any liability for myself I will state that the two major suppliers of
commercial live food starters appear to have some problems
distinguishing a true
Grindal worm from a white worm. I have purchased starters from two
different
places and what winds up growing is a worm that is about 3/4 to 1 inch
long.
This is not a Grindal Worm. It is one of the smaller of the 5 or 6
species of
white worms. A true Grindal Worm should not be much larger then 3/8 to
1/2 of
an inch. If you look in Masters there are about 5 species of white
worms
listed with sizes varying from 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch in length. Me thinks
that the
answer is that white worms are over growing the Grindal Worm cultures
that are
being sent out as starters.

All comments welcome
john
