You are fortunate George. Some urban areas, such as our, produce a lot of rainwater (even after a half hour wait) which smells like auto exhaust. It used to smell like steel mills.
 
I was catching more colds that usable rain water. (100 gallons of rainwater, a ton of colds / year.) My bride pretty nearly suggested the R.O. unit.

I found that catching rain water was a great solution to hard water 
that I got from my well. It was very simple to mix the two water sources 
to get the quality of water you desired.
