[Killietalk] window still (was Ways to keep humidity down)
If you have a warm, humid fishroom, and single pane window(s), and cold
outside temperatures, you may have water condensation running down your
window, leading to mold or damage around your window frame. I visited one
world-class breeder who made the most of this situation, by basically
constructing a water still with the window, for the collection of distilled
water for breeding the fish.
First you clean the inside of the window, rinsing well to remove any traces
of cleaner. Then you attach (silicone?) a narrow V-shaped sill (plastic)
along the bottom of the window glass, almost horizontal, at a very slight
downhill angle. The water that condenses on the window will run down to
the sill, and then over to the low spot of the "trough". Somehow collect
the condensate (my friend uses a shoelace as a wick) into a bottle or
bucket or whatever. Add the water to the fish, it can be a great
inducement for spawning.
