RE: [Killietalk] Cubanichthys pengelleyi
Pablo,
Good luck with them, Like I said there are a lot of people that have
more experience with Cubanichthys pengelleyi than myself. I'm glad Dan
chimed in as he is responsible for breeding the original wild pair from
the Weber 82 collection, and disseminating them more than 20 years ago.
I've seen Dan collect eggs from the inside rim of a corner box filter.
His fish inject the eggs right through the slots in the plastic housing.
I tried this method but mine never went near the box filter. The tank I
had them in had a homemade filter which included a section of open cell
foam that was exposed to the fish. I won't go into the design as it was
complicated but the fish laid their eggs in the foam. I eventually
found fry swimming around on the other side of the foam which was inside
the filter! After that I just supplied them with a piece of foam. The
one thing that is better about Dan's method is that you can actually get
your hands on the eggs. You can see them develop and separate out the
bad ones. With my method you just get a sponge full of eggs. Whatever
comes out is what you get. Perhaps if I had never let the fish have
access to the foam they would have done what they were supposed to and
laid their eggs in the filter box.
Anyway my method worked for me and I had more fry than I knew what to do
with.
By the way the aquaclear foam is the same stuff. If you go that rout it
will be fine. I think you will have better success is you weigh it down
instead of letting it float.
Cheers,

Thanks for the advise Chris:
No wonder the frind that gave them to me told me they laid their eggs in
the uppermost par of the mops. Maybe he doesn't knoe about the sponge
trick. I think aquaclear filter sponges are of similar texture, judging
from a fluval pad I saw on the web. Will move them all to 5 gal tank on
the weekend and provide the sponge.
Best Regards,
Pablo
