RE: [Killietalk] Will Amano Shrimp eat Killi eggs?

Guy,

Thank you very much for your response. I really appreciate it.
In the hopes that the eggs won't be voraciously gobbled up, keeping
everything in the tank well-fed has been my strategy so far. I haven't seen
any eggs yet, but that could be due to the fact that I'm not exactly sure
how to identify them in the first place. I imagine that an egg would be
easy to recognize, but I am a complete newbie.

Further, the killies are still pretty small. (about 3/4 inch) Might they be
too young to breed? I've plenty of homework to do in order to get the
answers. My apologies for hitting the list before doing the necessary
legwork. I just wanted to know whether or not the eggs stood a chance with
the shrimp in there. I could get rid of them, but I would like to keep them
if possible.

In any case, I'll verify the killi species name with my LFS owner.
Hopefully it will be of interest to you so that I can send you some eggs
once I get them.

Best,
Mike B.

Hi Mike, firstly I'd confirm with your friend what exactly your fish are.
It'll be important in the way you treat the eggs. Shrimp are efficient
scavengers - and from what I've seen will eat anything that will fit in
their gob. Just watch 'em hoover up tubifex. I would guess that eggs would
be vulnerable especially before they harden up. I havent noticed much
digging however, so if you do have nothos, and provide a deep enough
substrate enough eggs should survive. Keep the fish and shrimp well fed and
collect eggs regularly - if you dont see eggs after a week or two then try
without the shrimp. atb,
		Guy.
