[Killietalk] Re: pH monitors
Hi Ralph,
My Dad used to sell "pH pens" for years. We went through about three of
them, Thanks to me of course. They are not to likely to ever read properly.
It causes corosion and shorts on the board and hence destroying it. We
just pitched them after that. The precision needed is no longer reliable
even when one of them appeared to read correctly. The good news is you can
get them cheap through Drs. Fosters and smith (pet warehouse) or That Fish
Place.
There are High dollar ones and throw aways some of them are completely water
proof or " Ah sh** proof" while you are at it check into the conductivity
meters for instant acclimation aplications. The Conductivity meters start
around 50 or so.
One last thing on the older pH meters required that the (electrode/cathode
can't remember which) had to be at least kept damp inside the caps. I am
not sure if the newer technology has changed that.
If you want to know more about the instant acclimation thing I can give you
a brief dissertation on the subject including a few experiments. I will
tell you this It has saved a lot of Killies for me in emergent situations
ie: Ammonia toxic water in the fish bags.
God Bless, Lee van Hyfte <><
