[Killietalk] Aplocheilus Lineatus

Hola Svein,

The Aplocheilus Lineatus, or Golden Killie (in the fish emporiums) is an excellent killie for the beginner. I am a beginner as well and it has proven to be an excellent fish. I started with four and now have overt 20 scattered amongst several community tanks and in my pond. The Lineatus are one of the larger killies and are very peaceful. They thrive on a varied diet of brine shrimp, worms, and flake foods.

Breeding is easy. Put two mops in the tank and leave them for two weeks. Then put the mops in a seperate tank and in a week or two you should get 4 or 5 fry. Feed them baby brine shrimp and some finely crushed flake food a few times per day and they grow like weeds.

Make the mops by winding acryllic yarn (dark green works) about 50 turns around the length of your favorite book. Slip it off the book, cut one end of the loop and tie the other end with some yarn. Fasten the tied end to a cork from your favorite wine (I prefer Chablis but Pinot Gris works as well.) then boil the mops to sterilize them. Caution, do not let your wife serve the boiled mops for dinner. Although they look cooked spinach, the taste is quite different.

Cheers,
Larry
