RE: [Killietalk] Re: Hatching BBS eggs

Some people reuse the water, others don't.

I do, probably for about a week. But to do so I find it absolutely
essential to siphon the hatched shrimp daily, within a few hours of
their hatching. Otherwise they foul the water and I have to start with a
fresh mix. I take real care to siphon and net out ALL of the hatched
shrimp before returning the water to the inverted "pop-bottle".

If my schedule keeps me from removing the hatched shrimp each evening,
the next day I can count on most of the hatched shrimp being dead and
already decomposing and fouling the water. In that case I definitely
have to start with a fresh water/salt mix.

I keep a 60 watt bulb going within a few inches above the hatcher. This
keeps the temperature at around 80 and my artemia hatch within 24 hours.
If the lightbulb burns out (about every 2 months), the water cools and I
don't have a hatch for that evenings feeding. If it's a really busy day
and I don't have the time to siphon and feed, I turn the light off and
it delays my hatch for half a day.

I find that 1/4 teaspoon of eggs is enough to feed 60 tanks
easily....and still leave enough to make the hydra pink and fat and
multiplying like crazy. I can't understand how anyone can use a teaspoon
of eggs a day unless they have a huge hatchery going or their eggs are
not hatching in a good percantage.
