[Killietalk] Re: Problem hatching brine shrimp eggs

Many of us reuse the saline hatching solution over and over for several hatches. I replace mine after three to 4 days of use, I just dump in another teaspoon of eggs in the mornings into yesterday's solution after I syphon out the hatch from the eggs of the day before.

I am forced to remake the salt solution because the old solution causes the eggs to hatch in less than 24 hours and when I turn off the air to let the BBS settle a large number of the shrimps are dead. They have hatched hours earlier and have died. I don't have a cause as to why they are dead unless it is due to the consumption of their nutritional package and they have nothing to eat. But, dead none the less. A fresh saline solution and I'm back in BBS the next morning.

I take it Jeff that you never reuse old salt solution??

Also, wonder where you keep your cans of eggs? Fishroom, freezer . . . ?

I do use a hydrometer when mixing up the salt solution and have always used
the same level - 1.021 - for hatching.

I have examined the eggs after 24 and 48 hours and there is no sign of hatch
on all but a few. Same eggs (same can) that were hatching earlier without a
problem in 36 hours with super hatches.

I'm sure I'll find a solution eventually.
