Re: [Killietalk] Problem hatching brine shrimp eggs

Hi,

I have been having the same problem lately with brine shrimp.
I have been able to solve some of the problem by decreasing the recommended salt concentration by 25% and increasing the amount of epsom salt from one pinch to one larger pinch.

Some of the problem might have been caused by me. As it turns out, about the same time I started seeing the problem, my flashlight died. I started using a desk lamp to collect the brine at the bottom. As opposed to the flashlight, the desk lamp produced enough heat to generate slight currents and get stuff mixed up in the water. I got a new flashlight and things are better.

That being said, the current can I have (freshly opened about 1 month ago I think) does not compare to the old one I had. The old one would give me clean separation in 2 minutes even after 8 months from opening.

I have not been able to determine if the eggs in suspension are just sitting there on their own, or if they are sticking onto live/dead brine shrimp. Some are definetly stuck on live brine shrimp since they are getting kicked around.

take care,

Up until a few weeks ago , I was always getting great hatches and the eggs
were seperating well in the water in the hatching jar. Suddenly , the hatch rate
went to near zero and the eggs no longer sink or float at harvest time , but
rather stay suspended in the water. Nothing was changed - same water source ,
same salt , same temperature. I even tried 2 additional cans of eggs , all
premium grade , never opened. No luck. Various salinities and salts (non-iodized
, marine) , pH levels , and water sources (tap , RO) have been tried with the
same results.

Any ideas on why this is happening? Suggestions? Seems a bit hard to believe
that top quality eggs from 3 different sources would all be bad at the same
time , especially those that were hatching fine previously.
