I'd be interested in offering sanctuary to a native species that has a very
restricted range and might be in danger from habitat destruction.

In addition to NANFA, some also belong to the Native Fishes Conservancy 
(NFC), a slightly more hands-on-and-less-govt. style group. Their links

Some of us form or join groups like the Desert Springs Action Committee, 
http://www.pupfish.net/dsac/, so we can work on habitats and study the 
fish up close and personal. Here in CA, we are forbidden to even move a 
trapped minnow, much less sell it. We have to work directly with the 
govt. agencies or violate some law. Many western killies, like the 
*Crenichthys* and desert species of *Cyprinodon* are very warm water 
fish and would make superb aquarium fish. Unfortunately permits to keep 
are no longer issued, and keeping them without violates federal laws.

Federal Endangered or Threatened species are illegal to keep in *any* 
state, so don't do it. Some states will allow keeping fish that are 
illegal (by state law) in an adjacent state, depending on declared 
endangerment status. Check with your local Fish and Game Dept. *AND* the 
USF&WL Dept. when in doubt. Also check with them about any interstate 
shipment, as those rules become increasingly bizarre.

IMHO, this situation doesn't lead to pleasant hobby involvement or any 
real protection for our endangered natives. It does seem to be an 
effective full-employment policy for the agencies, so I suspect it will 
grow rather than wither away and die.
