Interesting. This jogged my memory...... Many years ago I visited a trout
hatchery near Cape Town in South Africa where they were raising very large
quantities of daphnia in big concrete ponds. The daphnia was used as food
for the young trout hatchlings. Anyway, they used to pour sheep's blood into
the ponds, presumably to generate the bacteria needed as food for the
daphnia.
