After doing everything I thought possible to protect my slapped-together pentium III (using the cheapest parts I could find last year) I was still having shutdowns in the middle of running programs. I called a friend on the left coast who told me it was either my motherboard or the power supply. Popping one of the side panels and unscrewing the power supply revealed caked on dust on the cpu fan and heatsink which I promptly vacuumed. I popped the lid off the ps and cleaned the fan and heatsinks as well. One or both fans were not working properly and my computer would shut down when it became too hot--silly me.
