As a US citizen you theortically don't need your passport and any good form of ID will suffice. However, in these days of heightened security it is my practice to carry my passport. I have that added problem, of course, that when they ask citizenship and I answer US, the accent is obviously not local. Immigration people advised me to always carry my passport.
