Re: [Killietalk] Traveling to Canada and back

On the east coast, to enter Canada you should shave all hair from your
face including eyebrows, remove all potential markings such as tattos,
piercings and clean the earwax out of your ears. Some suggest clipping
nose-hairs also. I have found that wearing Nehru jackets from the 1960s
often slows down your progress across the border as they search (and plant
in) your car for all sorts of drug paraphernalia and copies of Hemp Growers
magazine (except in Vermont where growing hemp and ultra liberal politicians
is a hobby).

In all honesty, I have never been stopped for more than a moment with
"Where are you going?" and "Where are you from?" type questions at the
border in either direction. It seems the only important question is "Are
you bringing anything into Canada that you plan to leave" and on return "Did
you buy anything?". I answer honestly and have never had a problem bringing
fish across when I say they are for my home aquarium. Make sure any plants
are not rooted in soil, however. That is subject to being confiscated. I
live 10 miles south of the border in New York and visit Quebec and Ontario
somewhat regularly.

I doubt you would ever be asked for more than a drivers license. I can't
speak for the west coast, but it seems to me the rules would be pretty
standard across the border east to west. I do always suggest going through
in a small border crossing rather than on a major highway. It's always much
quicker and simpler.
