The description at That Pet Place reads exactly like the finest kind of
19th Century "Snake Oil." That quickly raises my suspicion.
Does anyone know what is in it or how it is supposed to work?>>
All that I know is that it is supposed to remove organic material from the tank. It slowly changes from white to brown and then to black when saturated. I have used it in tanks that I knew were overcrowded and in need of major cleaning and it has cleaned up the water very quickly. In the case I mentioned earlier, I put a 1" X 2" piece of Polyfilter in a dirty (yellowing) ten gallon tank with over 50 small ancistrus starting to show distress. When I came home that evening, the water was crystal clear and the piece of Polyfilter (which I removed) was almost totally black.
However it works, my observation says that it does. I routinely use it in my cichlid tanks (everything from Discus to Tanganyika) as supplemental filteration in external filters and have been quite pleased.
As I understand it, the actual mechanism is a trade secret that they're going to keep secret as long as possible.
