I'm not sure exactly how it works but it removes organics, and I believe 
heavy metals, from the water via adsorbsion.  As the pad collects the organics it 
changes color.  When brown or black it is "full".  They claim that it will not 
leach the materials back into the water when full.  Other than that, we'll to 
leave it to the scientists out there.  Russ Feilzer
