Larry,
I suspect those were spoofed messages, that is forged From: headers.
Attachments don't come through on real killietalk messages. I receive lots
of messages from all sorts of people I don't know (and some I do) with
virus attachments. I just assume these days that the addresses are spoofed.
Some of the modern worms and viruses even contain their own SMTP engines
for sending out these bloody things.
As email has become such a burden to many people because of junk mail and
viruses, let me float an idea. I'd like to get a feeling for how people
would feel about using forums on the AKA web site. I see several
advantages: threading would be better (it seems we'll never convince people
to change headers on email messages); you could be selective about what you
read; forums should reduce the threat of viruses; both public and private
forums could be used, some for everyone, some only for AKA members (the
latter might include forums designed to talk to BOT members, for example -
note that I haven't asked them about that yet). The latter would be another
"value added" item for membership. I think this would reduce traffic on
killietalk, but I am not sure that's a bad thing.
So, could we start a thread about this so that I can get a measure of
people's interest? If we did it, I would need some of you to volunteer as
moderators for certain forums, doing such things as moving messages from
one to another if it were necessary.

I've received at least 25 emails from the killietalk list which had contained
the sobig virus. Fortunately, AOL automatically stipped the attachments out
of the mail.
AOL claims that they strip about 38,000,000 harmful attachments out of
incoming email every day.
