Walter Feeder (was Re: More OT (Back OT! (was Re: GLASS Flows? (gettingway OT!)))

Larry,

When Herr Walter gave his improptu presentation to BAKA, last year, he passed out samples of microworms and what he considered to be a new variation on them that he called "mini-mikro" that we started calling Walter worms.

He also showed us a cute way to feed them that dribbled them slowly into the tank so they didn't all sink together to the bottom.

A little piece of styrofoam, cut from a sheet had a 1/2" hole cut in the center. A small piece of coarse filter foam could be wedged down into the hole until it was in good contact with the water, wicking some up to the top of the foam piece which was a bit above the water line.

Microworms placed on the foam tend to work their way down to the water and dangle from the foam a bit before they fall on down to the bottom. This gives top and mid-tank feeding babies a better shot at them than simply dumping them into the tank. Works just like the cone feeders for black worms, but for micro or Walter worms.

As summer winds down, those 3-4"-diameter by 4'-long closed-cell foam float toys will be going on sale. I think they are called "Water Weasels" or some such name. Many have a center hole in them. A 3/4-1" slice makes a wonderful float for spawning mops, and with a piece of filter foam in the center hole it would make a good Walter Feeder, instead.

PS. This subject line reminds me of that artificial intelligence language that many of us worked (played?) with in the '70s, called LISP. I forget what the original acronym was, but we all said it stood for "Lost In Stupid Parentheses."

Practice hatching baby brine shrimp, if you want to have success with
basically carnivorous baby fish. There is no substitute for plentiful tiny
live food for killies, IMHO. They tend to not make it on dry foods. Green
water and vinegar eels are both pretty good, but only bottom feeders take
microworms readily (unless you build a Walter feeder).

Your other fish will love the bbs, so don't wait until you have starving
babies to start hatching them out.

Okay Wright:
Let me be the first to ask. I know what the Walter worms are but whats a Walter feeder ? The way some of the threads are growing this may be a loaded question. You never really know with this eclectic bunch...
