Re: KillieTalk Digest V5 #359

Hello Ron,

Just gotta' ask. How BIG is this tank. Or is the family room going to be the tank ? (:- ) . Seriously though; ya' have to shop around for some things. Another is Diatomaceous earth. Pet shops rip you. You can get it cheap at any swimming pool supply. Same stuff .

Tanks,

FWIW....I needed a large amount of gravel for a large planted communuity tank I'm setting up in the family room.
Stopping at my local shop., it was obvious those botique gravels at $3.50 for a 5 lb bag would bankrupt me. I noticed they also had one 50 lb bag of what was labeled Filpro Filtratuon Sand and Gravel (Superior Quartz Filtration Media)
NJ #3 It was a productof the U.S. Silica Co. whose web site is www.u-s-silica.com The LFS wanted $13.45 tax included for the 50 lb. Knowing this LFS does a typical 3X markup, I figureed I should be able to get it for under $5.I found some phone numvbers on the U.S. Silica web site and called to get number of a local distrbutor. One was provided (luckily) about 40 min away. I called them and got a price of $4.20 per bag plus tax. I picked up 8 bags that afternoon. It came to about 8.9 cents per pound. Its a very clean (just needs final rinsing) quartz based gravel and comes in all sizes. I used NJ #3 Very economical.
