On Line Listing

Hi Catherine,

I have to strongly disagree with you. First off, you confirm what I have
long suspected. The problem is not that people cannot afford computers but
that they refuse to use them. In other words, they refuse to change. But as
Barry's experiment with Killitalk has shown, it is the meager on line presence of
the AKA that has benefited the association the most these past few years. The
insistence on keeping the wasteful, repetitious, useless and dying BNL
(remember that the AKA was run for the first 20 years with the F&EL inside KILLIE
NOTES/JAKA and there was no BNL at all!) may be pleasing to a few wonderful
members who refuse to change but it is hurting the growth and future of the
organization as a whole. Instead of expecting the AKA to halt its progress to suit
their wishes (not even their needs!) should not these members who refuse to
change be asked to do what is best for the WHOLE organization and not what is only
selfishly pleasing? Is it the intent of the BOT to preserve the good feelings
of a few unbending souls or is it the intention of the BOT to as swiftly and
fairly as is humanly possible take the organization into the 21st century? Your
point of view is, frankly, frightening as it is based on catering to the
(unnecessary) wishes of a few and not a reasoned response to the needs of the
organization as a whole. It is such a POV that gives rise to the AKA being an "old
boy's network" and, frankly, in this instance, I wholeheartedly agree with
the critics. I cannot imagine that the BNL is a by-law requirement since it
appeared 20 years INTO the life of the organization but maybe there was a change
that I missed. I am not saying that all AKA business should be on line. KN/JAKA
should be paper. The BNL with its repetitious show announcements, video tape
listings, new member lists, chairman report, membership application and F&EL
can be placed on line and function BETTER than as a paper copy -- plus saving
lots of money. How can anyone argue with this? If for no other reason, think of
all the trees we will save!
