That theory was just that, a theory. The eventual culprit turned out to be a parasite that causes deformities, depending on where it lodged. See Scientific American January 2003. That is not to say that the cause if this fish anomaly is not a toxin leached from plastics. One has to be careful about assigning blame in these things, though. Many people were convinced that the frog problem was due to pollutants.

For storing water, if you don't have a food-grade drum (or a food-grade
liner for a regular drum) you can use 1 gallon milk jars. It is a bother
to work with such small containers, but they are 100% safe -- and they
are for free -- if your family drinks milk. :-)
