Hi Wright,
That's a good answer but it answers another question. You just made a
great case for the George Maier Fund and for the AKA funding it with auction
proceeds, $1 membership optional "tax" and private donations. I would absolutely
agree to a grant to study Madagascar killies -- even though I have no interest
in them and doubt that hobbyists will ever be committed enough to maintain
them over the long haul -- I hope I am dead wrong too. The AKA publicizing the
need is fantastic. A kick-off grant is great. In fact, one reason I would like
to see most of the BNL back INSIDE KN/JAKA and the conception of the
publication get fully back to a hobbyist magazine (KN) and away from a pseudo-scientific
journal is so -- like in the old days and like was once found in The Aquarium
and the Aquarium Journal, the old models for Killie Notes, all kinds of
little notes and stories could get published as used to happen in Killie Notes in
the 1970's when it truly was the voice of the AKA and not just a
semi-professional publication the AKA put out.
I do not think you make a compeling case for the AKA to sponsor
semi-commercial N&RSC collecting trips where 500-1000 pairs of some species will be
returned to be sold. (I don't think you were even trying to :-) For that idea, we
all still await one single isolated indisputable compeling reason for doing
it and until the yeah-sayers can give just ONE compeling reason their arguments
and planning do not have a valid leg on which to stand.
Bobby
