Re: One Compeling Reason for Collecting

Hello,

I must say i haven't read many of the emails in this
discussion, as this summer i've found little time for
email lists (unfortunately :( ) but i'd like to reply
to this email as it pertains to really this email
alone.

Fish collecting trips, in my eyes, can be completely
priceless. I look forward to the days where i can go
on my own. If people stopped collecting fish, where
would we be today in terms of our hobby, and in terms
of scientific progress? There are hundreds of books
with volumes of information on different species in
the world. If we stop collecting, and i don't mean
killifish exculsively, we won't be able to learn. What
if no one could come up with a compelling reason to
figure out the structure of DNA? Or to put bacteria on
a moldy pizza? Did these people have much more of a
compelling reason than to learn, to see, to discover,
to further explore? The chances of a casual fish
collecter discovering new species of fish on these
collecting trips may not be the best in the world,
however i'm sure it can, and does happen. Not everyone
who has discovered something life shattering had a
Ph.D in their field. Not everyone who writes a New
York Times Best Seller has a Ph.D in English.

If we stop collecting, we stop learning. What is life
without moving forward?
