Re: Stingy scientists? (was Re: George Maier Fund)



All Concerned,  I still think some people are riding a high horse.  You dont 
have to bring hundreds of fish back from one of these, now flaming from 
missile strikes, collecting trips.  I agree with Dr. Watters about the possible 
mis-conception of commercialism with respect to foriegn agencies, but there are 
many other ways to recoup monies expended: Slide sales/CD images from the 
localities; Complete photo-journal of the fish collected with a diversity index at 
each locale; The AKA can sell articles to trade magazines of the trip with lots 
of color photos, plugging the activities and concerns of the organization.  I 
geuss you could still argue the commercialism point, but it seems that we 
still can stay on the high road if we can put it together.  

I still do not see why a collecting trip like this cannot have the same 
benefits as a "propper" collecting trip.  I can understand opinions of just not 
wanting to spend money better than what I have been seeing.  It still appears to 
some, including myself, that this is an issue of who's sandbox we will get in.
