Re: JAKA CD

Regarding the CD project. Do not underestimate the amount of work needed to do this properly. One needs to scan the original JAKAs, convert them to PDF, proof read the generated documents as optical character recognition software isn't perfect, assemble them into a CD and develop a front end that will allow the user to browse the issues or search them.

We chose to use the Adobe program Capture to scan the docs. It semi-automates the scanning and OCR process. The slow part is proof reading. However, it is also interesting and you end up reading those old articles as you do so. This product generates a page "look and feel" that is identical to the original. You can see a sample on the AKA web site, under the Publications button.

I know this is an important project. I regard it as "my baby" right now and have invested considerable amounts of effort and my own funds in scanners, purchasing (as well as begging, borrowing, but not stealing) some old JAKAs that I didn't have, etc. I promise to push ahead with it. I have to admit that the necessity to move and redesign the web site did slow things down.

By the way, I decided not to scan the F&EL at this point. It would be incredibly tedious to proof and correct those, as the type is very small, the names unfamiliar to the OCR program, and so on. I realize they have historical value. I thought we could scan them and attach them eventually as a separate CD, or some such thing.

OK Bobby you wrote,
" I spoke to Barry about that recently and he has just been too busy to
get that tedious job done. I agree, let the AKA use some of this $100,000 to
hire someone -- or activate the computer committee -- to complete the CD of
all
old publications. I know Tony T. was working on the old INDEX, another jewel
of
a publication and he could probably use help too. There is so much wonderful
information in the old publications and it is a shame it is unavailable to
the
vast majority of the membership. People would just flip over what is in it.
Peter Tieback's old "Mop Shop" column is priceless. The old fishroom tour
articles are great. JAKA when it was purely a scientific publication and
published
separately was amazing. Rosario has a great old article on the history of
South
American Annual Spawning Mediums. There is tons of original stuff by Scheel
and Roloff. There are many long translated articles by Walter Foersch -- on
furzeri, oeseri, walkeri. There is a lot of translated material. People just
have
no idea the enormous wealth of unbelievably good material we are sitting on,
plus the old publications give a good idea of what the AKA used to be like.
Mouths will drool over the old multi-page F&EL - wait until you see all the
species.

Hi Bobby,

There has been a lot of posts to this list on this subject and it seems like
nothing gets done so.
How much would it cost to get YOU to work on it with the cost of your
computer upgrades included? Do not underestimate your costs?
I think You have the JAKA's Needed to do the job.
Draw it up and submit it to the board VIA This list.
If it is done in this manner we all know WHO and WHAT are the hold backs.
