Re: Question on:- Hydrogen Peroxide + Catalyst = Water + Oxygen

Hi there,

One month ago I read about posting on using Hydrogen Peroxide to aid
hatching and start searching for this product call oxydator. It seems to
work well. It uses 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) to react with a catalyst to
breakdown into water and thus releasing oxygen into water.

Question 1
The company claims that only hydrogen peroxide manufactured from their
company can be used. Has anyone use any hydrogen peroxide bought from
pharmacies?

I have used drugstore H2O2 in an emergency as an oxygen source. It usually is only half the strength you quote (3%). I just add it to the fish water (in very tiny amounts). The lower concentration is more stable, I think, and may not work in their apparatus.

Question 2 Does any of here know what is used as catalyst? I am thinking making my own version of oxygen generator. Still thinking of the design on how to prevent the tank water from getting in contact with the hydrogen peroxide. But before I come out with my version, I need to know what catalyst is suitable and stable for the reaction..

I don't have any idea what they use. Almost everything causes hydrogen peroxide to dissociate into water and O2 -- light, organic matter, inorganic salts or their ions, you name it. It is a notoriously unstable molecule, which is partially why it is such a powerful oxidizer. Perhaps one of our chemist friends can suggest something that would provide a slow, long-term release of O2. From my limited knowledge of chemistry, that sounds a bit improbable without elaborate pH, temp., tds, etc., controls.
