Silica sand may be fine for spawning but will very inadequate for egg incubation. The silica sand has very poor water retaining properties so your eggs may desicate in storage and die. It would be much better to incubate the eggs in peat or on damp paper towels or even water incubate (the killietalk archives are full of ideas).
To harvest the eggs out of the sand stir it up and then swoop through the water in a figure 8 motion and you should get most of the eggs (in theory, I haven't tried it as I use coconut palm fibre to spawn my nothos).
