In my experience a brine shrimp net and a daphnia net are two different
items. A brine shrimp net is designed to sift out brine shrimp in a poured or
siphoned situation and is small 3 - 4 inches wide with a short wire handle. A
true daphnia net is for daphnia collectors and is long handled, sturdy frame
and a wide and long net (12 - 14 inches deep). A classic description can be
found in Exotic Aquarium Fishes by William T. Innes. On page 19 (eleventh
edition), WTI describes it as
"a special kind of net, made of cheesecloth (see next page). It should be
about 10 inches across, 14 inches deep and of seamless pattern, with rounded
bottom." He shows some collectors on the next page wielding such a net.
Modern day versions can be made with nylon paint strainer bags. A long,
strong handle is needed and strong wielder to be effective. I have made such
a net, but I can no longer find a good collecting site. I now try to raise
daphnia myself. However, never in sufficient quantities.
