Re: fruit fly media

The medium should be dry enough that it doesn't easily slip out when you
shake the jar sideways or upside down. When the medium gets wet, it's
impossible to control. I try to use pretty dry media, and add paper toweling
both to absorb excess moisture and for the flies to climb upon. They also lay
eggs on the paper, which is useful for mailing to other people. I stopped
keeping frogs, so I stopped keeping flies. But they are the best possible
food for killies. The biggest jars I used were pint mason jars, but 1/2 pint
jars with narrow necks are better for control. Haven't seen these types of
jars in a while. They resemble the old time 1/2 pint cream bottles from the
dairy, the ones with the paper lift up tab. Narrow necks make using cotton
balls easy..
