Experienced input.

Hi All,
I am looking for some experienced input to my latest fish room project.
I currently store my aged tap water and ro water in 50 gal. barrels.
Because of how my plumbing in the basement is set up these barrels are
on the opposite side of the basement from my fish room. (Approx. 45
feet) When I make water changes I am hauling buckets of water from the
barrels into my fish room and then into my tanks. As you can imagine it
is a laborious job. I would like to use a submersible transfer pump and
run a line from the barrels into my fish room. Ideally I would like to
be able to turn the water on and off using a valve in the pump discharge
line while in the fish room with out having to turn the pump on and off
each time I wanted to fill a tank. I am not sure if I can turn off the
valve in the fill line and leave the pump running. Would this cause a
problem with the pump? I am sure some of you have set up some similar
means of transferring water to make water changes simpler. I would
appreciate any input anyone may be able to share with me.
Thanks,
George
