My answer to this discussion is to not recirculate water through multiple 
tanks. That way whatever happens in one tank will stay in that tank. My 
current, still being perfected, approach is to provide a slow
semi-continuous 
replacement of water in the tanks with new water. The waste goes out into
the 
yard and will be diverted to the vegetable garden this summer, if we have 
another drought. Oh, oh, I just realized that will recirculate the pathogens

through us instead of other fish. Maybe not. Just ornamentals.
