RE: food for daphnia

Check this site for information on culturing daphnia and microalgae (among
other things): www.aquaculturestore.com
they sell cultures and media and are fish people friendly. They have culture
information archived.

Hi,

I have successfully used canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin, not pumpkin
pie filling which has spices, etc.) which is significantly cheaper
than baby food. I just took a little and mixed it in a glass of
water. Any small pieces not suspended are eaten by the snails I have
in my moina tanks.

For the last 6 months, I have been running a green water culture
indoors. A 30 gallon tank with 72 W of compact fluorescent lights
(on 24 hrs/day) and 6 goldfish (4" - 6" long) provides enough green
water for two 15 gallon tanks with moina cultures. The green water
is so thick you can not see the bright goldfish in the tank if they
are more than about 3/4" from the glass or top of the tank. Any
green water removed to feed cultures is replaced with wtaer from
nearby fish tanks which helps keep those tanks well changed. The
moina cultures will turn a yellowish color after all the algae is
eaten. I keep about 10 gallons of water in each of the moina tanks
and remove 2 - 5 gallons a day per tank replacing it with 2 - 5
gallons of green water. This "forced" water changing (else the tank
overflows) keeps the water fresh and the culture thriving. Also, you
do not have to worry about overfeeding like I occasionally do when
using sweet potato, yeast, or pumpkin. You can also let the culture
go for a couple of days and it will soon bounce back once you start
feeding it. Neither the green water nor the moina have come close to
crashing during this time.
