Re: NEW, VERY ON TOPIC, (LOL) JAPANESE MEDAKA

Hi Ray,

I was away for almost a week, so missed the whole thread. Sorry to be so
late, responding.

Medakas are not really killifish, but they look and behave very much like
many Lampeyes. Their color is more in irridescence, so they are more showy
in light from a window than one over the tank. I kept *O. celebensis* for
quite a while, and they are almost identical to *Procatopus aberrans* in
size and color, but maybe less red in the fins.

Keep in schools in a large, well-aerated tank, with plenty of plants for
the female to deposit her eggs on. In the spectrum from real egg-layers to
live-bearers, these have an interesting intermediate place. Unlike
*Cynopoecilus melanotaenia*, who seem to be internally fertilized and lay
elsewhere, the female extrudes a small cluster of eggs, for fertilization
by the male, each morning. She then goes and finds a place to deposit them.

Fun, active up-front fish. Enjoy them and don't worry too much about water
conditions or food. They seem very tolerant.
